RedLetterMedia breaks down exactly why ‘Ghostbusters (2016)’ was so controversial

RedLetterMedia recently broke down all the controversy and negativity from the production of 'Ghostbusters' in their latest video. Check it out above!

Now that everyone who actually intended to see the new 'Ghostbusters' movie has made it to the other side, many have raised some questions in regards to the whole ordeal from the production: Why did this movie have to happen? Why did it go so wrong? When are we getting a sequel? (Maybe not that last one.)

In a recent video featuring their "Scientist Man" character, Mike Stoklasa, Rich Evans, and Jay Bauman of RedLetterMedia review all the negativity surrounding the final product and what director, Paul Feig, was thinking when he took part in the project. Mainly focused on Sony Pictures, they explore the mentality the studio seems to have with producing films with no more motive than to expand brand names and appease advertisers.

With the misguided influence of the studio, it seems that Feig was tapped to direct as a result of his strange and essentially blasphemous ideas he had for a sequel/reboot, which they knew would stir up enough controversy and hype towards the project. In a leaked email, it was revealed that he had pitched some concepts that were somehow MORE ridiculous than what was presented:

"We'll see four very different women come together and figure out in funny, scary, and action-packed ways how to save New York City and the world…In what I think could be a billion dollar idea, [the villain] recruits the ghosts of evil beings from other parts of the universe–yes, ghost aliens!"

They go on to address Sony's "rigging" of YouTube comments for the initial trailer, removing any negative comments that don't expressly address the mysoginistic, anti-women angle, as well as discussing what the original 'Ghostbusters' cast thought about the project from behind the scenes, contrary to what the media would have you believe. While none of this is a valid excuse for the cinematic failure, it at least answers some questions as to why they felt the need to create such an insulting representation of such a beloved franchise.
