Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime made a number of significant statements in a recent interview with Kotaku, discussing the topics of video-on-demand services like Netflix, and a number of other interesting topics regarding the Nintendo Switch.
Regarding video-on-demand, Reggie said these features would come to the Switch "in due time," but that it was down to the service providers to push it, not Nintendo.
While speaking to Kotaku, he was asked about Netflix specifically. He responded saying, "You’d have to ask the folks at Netflix. I have [Netflix CEO] Reed [Hasting]’s number." This leads us to believe the Switch is prepped and ready for such features, and the green light is in the hands of the providers themselves. Hopefully, this happens sooner, rather than later, to maintain the Switch's success in the market, which is beating last year's sales numbers of the Xbox One and PS4, and reaching 2 million sales since launch.
Fils-Aime also talked about the update 4.0.0 for the Switch. The update added a number of things, and one that slipped under the radar initially was the addition of GameCube controller support. He clarified that the update was merely meant to enable third-party peripherals to work on the console. With that update, it was actually an accident that GameCube controller support was among the number of things made available. It was "as much a surprise to us as it was to consumers."
Lastly, Fils-Aime discussed Nintendo's My Nintendo rewards service, which still hasn't offered any Switch-specific rewards. He hinted that this was likely to change in the near future. "There are unique elements coming for Nintendo Switch. We’ll be announcing those in due time. We do believe having a strong loyalty program for all of our products is important and certainly our fans appreciate it."
If anyone was worried about the Switch keeping pace with its first year of launch, Nintendo's Yoshiaki Koizumi confirmed a similarly steady stream of releases in 2018 for the Switch.
