Report: GTA Online’s Doomsday Heist may have originally been a single player DLC

Grand Theft Auto V is quite possibly the biggest game of all-time due to its absurd amount of copies sold. The reason it keeps selling copies despite releasing nearly five years ago is due to Rockstar Games' support for the online mode which gives players new content both big and small.

Usually, it's just some new PVP modes or something along those lines with clothes and cars but this month we got the game's biggest update yet which delivered all-new heists. We reviewed the update and praised it for its humor, bombastic missions, and the fact that it feels like PS2-era GTA with all of its whacky mechanics and objectives. Players seem to be having a field day with it but some veteran GTA players are wondering if The Doomsday Heist is part of the remains of the scrapped single-player DLC for the game.

Before GTA Online took off, Rockstar stated they had plans for substantial single-player content later down the line but never went into much detail. Over time, stuff leaked out with hints as to what it could be but Rockstar went quiet on it and never really brought it up ever again. Fans were pretty disappointed as the campaign was well received and people wanted to see more of Franklin, Trevor, and Michael's adventures, sadly that will never happen.

In 2015, some code from GTA V was posted in the GTA Forums' single-player DLC discussion referencing things like a casino heist, a jetpack which was only just added last week, and more. Furthermore, the code references "Clifford" which is the name of the supercomputer found in The Doomsday Heist.

It's possible we'll see more of this content begin to surface as we move into the new year and Rockstar gears up to release Red Dead Redemption 2. If true, it's a bit disappointing we were unable to see this content in single player but maybe Rockstar encountered issues and didn't want to get rid of all of their work so they found a way to recycle it. We'll likely never know the full story but it is interesting nonetheless.
