Resident Evil 4 Remake reportedly in development; Scheduled for 2022

After the success of Capcom’s remakes of Resident Evil 2 and the recently released Resident Evil 3, it looks like they’re going to continue the trend. VGC is reporting that Capcom has entered full production on a Resident Evil 4 Remake which is slated for 2022, presumably for next-gen consoles.

The original plan for the last two remakes was to just put the Raccoon City saga on new consoles and modernize them but it seems like the success inspired them to go for the big one. The reported Resident Evil 4 Remake will NOT be led by the game’s original director, Shinji Mikami, but he has provided “informal advice” and given the project his blessing.

The remake is being helmed by studio M-Two, formed by former PlatinumGames head Tatsuya Minami. As for who is taking the title of director, it remains unclear. M-Two has been operating since 2018 and even did some work on Resident Evil 3 Remake. There’s no word as to what the Resident Evil 4 Remake will entail in terms of similarities and differences to the original.

Resident Evil 4 has been widely regarded as the best in the series over the years. Capcom has put it on just about every platform they possibly could since its original release on GameCube and PS2, even going as far as to release it on PC twice. The game successfully blended the action-horror elements the series was moving towards without going overboard or losing its tension.

Later games like Resident Evil 5 and 6 doubled down on the action and spectacle, often losing its scariness in a way that 4 never did. Whether Capcom will remake those two after 4 remains to be seen but they’re mostly thought as the black sheeps of the franchise.

Capcom is also reportedly developing another first-person title in the series in the form of Resident Evil 8. It’ll release in the first quarter of 2021 and center around witches and insanity.
