Respawn officially confirms Titanfall battle royale game, Apex Legends

Fortnite is dominating the battle royale scene, PUBG is still holding its own but has definitely fallen off, and Call of Duty’s Blackout mode is proving to be a worthy competitor to both the genre giants. Now, Titanfall developer Respawn is dropping a surprise tomorrow (Monday, January 4th, 2019).

Respawn will be unveiling and seemingly releasing their new battle royale game tomorrow. This has been rumored all weekend but the studio has officially confirmed the existence of the game which is known as Apex Legends, reportedly a free-to-play battle royale game set within the Titanfall universe.

Apex Legends likely refers to the Titanfall guns for hire faction Apex Predators, featured in the campaign and multiplayer of the sequel. While details are quite sparse at the moment, the rumors have suggested that it’ll be a 60 player battle royale game without the popular titan mechs.

Kotaku is reporting that the game will borrow mechanics similar to a MOBA or Overwatch with hero characters that have key abilities/powers. An anonymous tipster to Kotaku stated that “It plays like Titanfall mixed with Overwatch and Blackout from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.” The game was also shown to influencers recently who will likely have plenty of hands-on impressions shortly.

Respawn was allegedly working on a third mainline Titanfall game somewhere along the way but it’s unclear if that has evolved into this in order to get something out sooner rather than later or if that’s still in the pipeline. The FPS developer is also slated to release their Star Wars game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, in the holiday season this year.

The game will be set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, following one of the last remaining Jedi after Emperor Palpatine executed Order 66 and exterminated the mystical warriors.

The official reveal of Apex Legends will be tomorrow at 8 AM PT/11 AM ET, it’s expected to release tomorrow for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. We’ll have the full details tomorrow and likely a review of the game in the coming weeks.
