Ride Along 2 dethrones Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the box office

After a four week run at the top of the North American box office, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally met its match. Following its record-breaking run, the J.J. Abrams-direct film, and latest in the core Star Wars saga, dropped to number 3 this weekend. Taking its place atop the box office is the newly released buddy cop comedy Ride Along 2, starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. The Revenant followed at number 2.

Below are the estimates for the weekend of January 15-17, 2016:

  1. Ride Along 2 – $35,320,000
  2. The Revenant – $29,500,000
  3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $26,377,000
  4. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi – $16,218,000
  5. Daddy's Home – $9,543,000
  6. Norm of the North – $6,840,000
  7. The Forest – $6,015,000
  8. The Big Short – $5,300,000
  9. Sisters – $4,710,000
  10. The Hateful Eight – $3,570,000

Star Wars: The Force Awakens now has an estimated domestic box office total of $858,000,000, making it the largest movie in U.S. history. It has also earned $1.87 billion globally.
