Developer Psyonix has announced a radical new strategy for its popular car-soccer game Rocket League. Starting this summer, the smash multiplayer hit of the generation is going free-to-play.
Rocket League is undoubtedly one of the biggest success stories of the past decades. Its rise to meteoric success is owed to no small part being part of Sony’s free games for PS+ subscribers. Seemingly overnight, millions upon millions of players discovered the taste of mechanized soccer. The rest is history as they say.
This success culminated in Epic Games purchasing the developer Psyonix last year and it was immediately clear that the new owner had big plans for Rocket League. Since they are the company behind the battle royale sensation Fortnite it does come as no surprise that their new purchase is now following suit by becoming a free-to-play title.
After nearly five years, millions of players, and billions of soccar matches played, it’s time to talk about the next chapter of Rocket League. The game wouldn’t be where it is today without our dedicated and amazing community. Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re gearing up to make that community even bigger. Beginning later this summer, Rocket League is going free to play!
There is no concrete release date being shared when the game will transition apart from a ‘late summer’ description. But one thing we do learn is that with the jump to F2P, Rocket League will disappear from Steam and be exclusively available on the Epic Games Store. Existing owners on Steam will still be able to play the game of course and also receive future updates, but the game will no longer be purchasable for new customers.
There is good reason to purchase the game before it goes F2P though since legacy owners will receive the following bonuses:
