Ever since Microsoft made a public invitation for other consoles to join them in cross-platform play, developers have been patiently awaiting a response from Sony, along with the rest of the rest of the gaming community. Unfortunately, Sony offered two comments on the invitation, both of which were non-answers.
Sine the invitation, a number of developers – like CD Projekt RED (The Witcher) and Psyonix (Rocket League) – have come out saying that they were ready and waiting. Last we heard about Rocket League and cross-play between the PS4 and Xbox One, Psyonix had "figured out" how to make it work.
It turns out that the devs have more than just figured it out, all they need to do is flip a switch if Sony agrees.
"Right now, we're literally at the point where all we need is the go-ahead on the Sony side and we can, in less than a business day, turn it on and have it up and working no problem," said Psyonix Vice President Jeremy Dunham to IGN. "It'd literally take a few hours to propagate throughout the whole world, so really we're just waiting on the permission to do so."
While Psyonix is ready and waiting for Sony's approval, there's the question of whether or not sony will agree to it. Dunham has high hopes that Sony will eventually come around:
"Sony's such a big company that I'm sure it takes a while for them to figure out what it is that the roadblocks are, what sort of issues they might run into with other titles, any number of things that I can't even begin to speculate on.
We definitely ask them for updates often, and we're still very confident that they're eventually going to open those doors and welcome us in, but we also are really understanding that it's going to take a while especially given all the ramifications of everything.
It was just as much of a surprise to them as, I think, the rest of the world when Microsoft said that they would do it."
Regardless of it potentially being a surprise to Sony, they haven't opened up on the subject – despite even more developers lining up waiting for a "yes."
