A new report via TheGamer shows that Rockstar Games acquired Ruffian Games. Furthermore, the studio is now rebranded as Rockstar Dundee and already works on several new titles.
The unfathomable success of GTA5 can not be underestimated. It already counts as one of if not the most profitable entertainment product of all time. Despite being over seven years old, the future is bright for it still with next-gen ports in the making.
This immense success naturally gives Rockstar Games some leeway with business decisions. The company is growing. Or rather, it has already. Ruffian Games is now part of the Rockstar family.
The Scottish studio was rebranded on October 6th into Rockstar Dundee but just learn about it. Ruffian is best-known for 2010’s Crackdown 2. If the third Crackdown is your only experience with the series, you should know that Crackdown 2 is actually a solid game.
This makes the acquisition so interesting. In recent years, Ruffian Games helped with the Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Just last year the studio was hiring for new projects. The interesting part here is that it was for multiple games for Rockstar Games.
There are no details about any of those projects but suffice to say, things must be going very well for Rockstar to outright buy the studio. Obvious candidates are of course GTA 6. But with Ruffian’s expertise in ports, it would make sense to see remakes as well.
Is this the first step of an actual Red Dead Redemption remake? We can hope. But until further details emerge, it’s only speculation.
