Rocksteady debunks rumors of a Superman game

Rocksteady Studios slammed any hopes of fans that the developers would unveil their new game at this years The Game Awards. The studio also nonchalantly refuted rumors that they are working on a Superman game.

Co-founder and Game Director Sefton Hill of Rocksteady clarified in a Tweet that fans shouldn’t tune in to The Game Awards in hopes of getting the first glimpse of Rocksteady’s new project. That the talented folks at the studio were working on an open-world Superman game has been rumored for a long while now, but Hill very directly addressed that topic as well. It looks like that’s a no.

The connection of Rocksteady taking on the task of creating a Superman game makes so much sense at first glance. After all, the studio was the reason that video game adaptations from comic book heroes became more than just throwaway cash-in projects by movie studios. All superhero games are now judged by Rocksteady’s outstanding work on the Batman Arkham series. The mix of passionate dedication to the source material and brilliant gameplay set a new bar.

Seeing that Rocksteady is owned by Warner Bros. Interactive, it makes almost too much sense to give the studio the task of creating a befittingly great game of another superhero under their portfolio. Superman. The caped Kryptonian famously never got a really awesome game incarnation and after four Arkham games, fans were hoping to see Rocksteady take on the big S.

This dream is now over. At least, as far as a dedicated Superman game. We already know Rocksteady’s new project is likely going to be a GaaS-type of game from previous hirings. Jason Schreier from Kotaku also fueled this idea in a recent podcast, stating that from the info he knows, it is indeed going to be a GaaS game including a cast of superheros.

It would have been great to finally get an official look at what the studio has been cooking for so long, but The Game Awards won’t be the venue for that it seem. Hey, that doesn’t mean that there will be any kind of shortage in new game announcements during the show.
