When I think back to the reservations Disney has had about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, I can't help but believe that they were either being disingenuously humble or that they don't fully grasp the weight and value of the Star Wars brand. Either way, it doesn't matter because the spin-off film has officially crossed the $1 billion threshold at the Global Box Office according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film has earned just over half its money in the US at $512.2 million with $499.1 million coming from overseas for a total of $1.011 billion. The totals come in after the film's 39th day in theaters and is only the 28th movie in history to earn $1 billion. For comparison's sake, The Force Awakens grossed $2.068 billion globally, but Rogue One was never expected to match it. That said, there's little point in pretending that a movie about underdogs was ever an underdog itself at the theaters.
Rogue One opened in China only two weeks ago to the tune of $31 million, so it seems that the Chinese had quite a hand in pushing the film over the $1 billion mark.
