Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s title apparently has multiple meanings

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is just around the corner and represents a lot of firsts for the series. Outside of the Clone Wars TV series (plus the corresponding film) and Rebels TV series, Rogue One will be the first true spin-off in the Star Wars saga. It is this point that Director Gareth Edwards believes, give Rogue One's title multiple meanings.

He said:

"I'd been thinking about it. What does it mean? 'Rogue One' is a military call sign to some extent, but this is the first film that's gone off-piste and is not part of the saga – or the Anakin story – so it’s the 'rogue' one, you know?"

If you like light plays on words, then I guess yeah you can see where Edwards is coming from. But he also says the name is a reflection of its protagonist, the mercenary Jyn Erso. He said:

"It's kind of describing her as well in a similar way. It has [all] these split, multiple meanings that made it feel like the right choice."

Rogue One was the military call sign used by Luke Skywalker during the Battle of Hoth and by Wedge Antilles during the Battle of Endor against the second Death Star. Jyn Erso is likely the first in a series rebels to use the name, so perhaps this could spawn more stories featuring other characters that hold the sign as well.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story releases in theaters on December 16th, 2016.
