Ron Gilbert announces that he’s leaving Double Fine Productions

Video game designer Ron Gilbert – the mastermind behind the Monkey Island series – has announced today that he’s leaving Double Fine Productions now that the studio’s latest title, The Cave, has been completed.

"It's time for me to move on from Double Fine and plot my next move,” Gilbert said on his website, Grumpy Gamer, today. "I want to thank all the amazing people at Double Fine for all their hard work on The Cave. It was a true pleasure to work with every one of them over the past two years. So much fun. I will miss them all. And of course to Tim for creating the opportunity to come there and make The Cave."

The Tim that Gilbert is referring to is none other than Double Fine’s president Tim Schafer who responded to Ron’s touching note

"Sad to say ‪@grumpygamer feels like it's time to spread his grumpy wings and fly. Good luck, Ron! Thanks for The Cave!"

Gilbert didn’t deliberately touch on where he plans to venture to next, but he did profoundly say, “So many games left to be designed,” which will certainly please fans of his past work. There’s been some rumors that he’s set on focusing on an iOS title alongside animator and designer Clayton Kauzlaric, a title he refers to as Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG, or as we’d like to call it: a game writer’s worst nightmare.

Nevertheless, expect to see more of Ron Gilbert very soon. He’s a talented man and we wish him the best wherever he’s off to next.
