Continuing to better describe each of the indie titles announced for PS4 today, we now have Chasm, a procedurally-generated RPG platformer brought to us by Discord Games. Before we get into the studio's logic behind the game, here's a description first:
In Chasm, players take up the role of Daltyn, a young soldier sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a mining crew in the remote mountain town of Karthas. Upon arrival you learn the town has been cut off from the outside world by supernatural forces. Now trapped, you are left with no option but to explore the mines below the town and uncover the source of the disturbances. Only by gaining new special abilities, evading dangerous traps, and defeating hordes of deadly enemies can you hope to save Karthas — and possibly the world!
Discord Games' goal with Chasm is to make an "authentic Metroidvania-style experience that utilizes procedural generation to keep the experience fresh for repeated playthroughs." To do so, the world is based on a four-tier hierarchal structure which is explained in fuller length on the PlayStation Blog. For those interested in game design I highly recommend you read it. For everyone else, you can look forward to Chasm on PS4 later this year.
