Rumor: Amazon launching Android-based game console in 2013

Rumor has it that Amazon, a well-established online retailer, is dipping its foot into the console gaming market. Anonymous sources speaking to Game Informer have claimed that Amazon is in the process of developing an Android-based game console that is set to release this year — possibly as soon as Black Friday on November 29.

The source suggests the existing catalog of Android games available on the Amazon marketplace will be used to leverage the new system, which will have its own dedicated controller. What would be really neat is if Amazon allows users to download one productivity or game app for free each day as it does on its other devices, like the Kindle.

Obviously such a system would be unable to compete with the power of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but Amazon could give other Android-based platforms like the OUYA a run. While the OUYA received tremendous support prior to release, its launch was met with lukewarm reception with very few users purchasing games.

It seems more and more are jumping into this Android-based game fad, but it remains to be seen if there is actual consumer demand for it. The biggest hurdle to overcome is convincing users why they should bother to buy a new console for games they can already play on their mobile device. Is playing on the big screen enough incentive?

Would you be interested in an Android-based game console from Amazon?
