Update
It looks like the entire leak was a fabrication and indeed untrue. Users on Resetera were able to deduce that the supposed leaked screenshots are in fact scenes from a free Unity tech demo.
Original Story
According to an unverified leak today, we learn tons of juicy details about Ubisoft’s unannounced next Assassin’s Creed title. If the leak is to be believed, the game will be called Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok and will come out next year as a cross-gen game.
Before we start, as this leak originates from 4chan and is yet unverified by industry sources, we have to put a big disclaimer upfront. Fake rumors and fabricated stories about future games are plenty but from past info, we are inclined to believe that today’s leak might be actually true. Furthermore, besides a mere info dump, there’s also early in-development screenshots of Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok, further bolstering the believability. It’s best you make your own opinion.
We previously reported about Ubisoft possibly teasing the next Assassin’s Creed game’s setting in their recently-released other big release The Division 2. Back then, keen gamers noticed posters of what look like a warrior holding the Apple of Eden. An important artifact in the Assassin’s Creed lore. Since the word “Valhalla” was also largely written on that poster, many assumed this to hint at the next Assassin’s Creed being set in Norse mythology.
Today’s new leak further bolsters these ideas by explicitly telling the game’s name. It’s supposedly going to be called Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok and will indeed feature Vikings as the main focal point. Other notable details are the map. If you thought Origins and Odyssey were large, strap in. Ragnarok is supposed to feature the Scandinavian regions of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Great Britain on top. That sounds massive even compared to other Assassin’s Creed games!
In terms of gameplay, the winning formula of Odyssey is being kept while naval combat will be toned down in favor of another aspect. Exploration is going to play a much bigger role in Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok and players will be asked to discover the many secrets of Ragnarok’s vast world.
The screenshots may look fake, and they really don’t look that great but as an in-development title such things are to be expected. More interesting is the info that Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok will be a cross-gen title and will release next year. You can read more about the leak on Resetera.
