A recent report today by TheRinger called "Movies aren't dead" is a bit of an expose on the state of the movie industry in Hollywood. According to the report, the upcoming Ben Affleck movie script is apparently a total mess.
According to the report, the outlet spoke with Bret Easton Ellis, who revealed the information. Ellis stated that “I was having dinner with a couple of executives who know other executives who are working on the '[forthcoming] Batman movie, and they were just telling me that there are serious problems with the script".
Ellis continued by saying
And that the executives I was having dinner with were complaining about people who work on the Batman movie. And they just said they went to the studio and they said, ‘Look, the script is … Here’s 30 things that are wrong with it that we can fix.’
Now, problems with scripts arent' that big of a deal, especially when Affleck himself has already noted that he wasn't happy with the current state and that he wanted to ensure it was done the right way. The issue, however, is with the apparent response of Warner Bros. executives. The executives said,
‘We don’t care. We don’t really care. The amount of money we’re going to make globally, I mean 70 percent of our audience is not going to be seeing this in English. And it doesn’t really matter, these things that you’re bringing up about the flaws of the script.’ So I do think global concerns play a big part in how movies, and what movies, are being made, obviously.”
Now, that's the part that is going to give people a lot of issues. Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice and the most recent Suicide Squad were reviewed terribly. There were plot holes galore and both films saw clashes between directors and studio heads where they just couldn't seem to get out of their own way. Affleck himself is an incredibly accomplished actor and writer with multiple academy awards. I'll be the first to admit he was decent as Batman despite me (and pretty much everyone else) having a very strong sense of "Ben Affleck as Batman? Really" type of response upon first hearing the news. On the other hand, Warner's apparent nonchalant attitude is disturbing.
The Batman is tentatively scheduled to begin shooting sometime this Spring with no exact date yet. We'll have to wait and see if any changes get done in time to ensure the script is where it will need to be for production. Also, keep in mind the quotes from Ellis are not his, but what he is saying the Warner executives themselves stated. Warner will most definitely not confirm any of this, but for now we're caught between a rock and a hard place with Affleck's production credentials and Warner's apparent empathy for how super hero films end up.
