Rumor: Cyberpunk 2077 release window leaked?

People are excited about CD Projekt Red's (CDPR) next project, Cyberpunk 2077, and for good reasons. Excitement aside, it seems like a possible release window for this highly anticipated game has been leaked.

Several reports from outlets like Fraghero and The Know have been reporting about a possible release window for CDPR's next big role-playing game, Cyberpunk 2077, and the leaks point towards a third quarter 2017 release.

Swedish online retailer Komplett lists Cyberpunk 2077 as available for purchase on February 2, 2017, and as releasing on September 30, 2017. This brings us to the $1,000.000 question, does this date hold any truth to it or is it just a regular placeholder date?  To make it even more difficult to decide whether this date is the correct or not, there are good arguments for both sides, both for it being plausible and for it not being plausible (with help from Reddit).

  • There have been four years since the first announcement trailer for Cyberpunk 2077, that would fit the release schedule that past games have followed. As of now CDPR has a schedule of releasing two games before 2021 and the first to be released could be Cyberpunk 2077, and that could very well happen sometime in 2017, that is if they want to stick to the four-year schedule.
  • CDRP has also mentioned that they liked how Bethesda handled the announcement for Fallout 4 where they announced the game and released it only six months after, something that could indicate that CDPR wants to do something similar. Wanting to do a similar release to Fallout 4 could also explain why the developer has been som silent when it comes to communicating anything about the game.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 has been worked on alongside of The Witcher 3 and the main focus lies on Cyberpunk 2077, they did not start on Cyberpunk after Witcher was finished. The team has grown a fair bit, there is a whole lot of people working on Cyberpunk 2077 now.
  • CDPR might also keep things close to home until they are ready to reveal anything more to avoid accusations of "downgrading" Cyberpunk 2077 as well.

This all looks fine and convincing, but there is also a few convincing arguments on why the September 30 date should not be trusted.

  • First of all, back in April CDPR was looking for people who had experience working on engines, and as of now they have seven pages of jobs available at their various offices. The fact that CDPR has been so quiet about the progress of Cyberpunk 2077 and that they are hiring for fundamental positions could be a sign of them still being early in development.
  • There seems to be a "it will be ready when it is ready" mentality over Cyberpunk 2077 and all they have said is that Cyberpunk will be "fu**ing badass".
  • In 2020 an RPG book on which the game is based on will be released, it would make sense to release the game alongside the book.
  • There has been next to no information about Cyberpunk 2077 besides that they are working on it, it would make sense for CDPR to try and build some sort of hype or a topic of conversation.

Well, there it is, the arguments for why we should believe the September 30 release date for Cyberpunk 2077 and why we should not. We at GameZone put no value in either side of the argument, we leave that to the readers to discuss. Let us know, do you think that Cyberpunk 2077 will release in 2017 or not?
