Rumor: Disney to phase out Princess Leia’s Slave Outfit

They can try all they want, but the internet will never forget the outfit.

In 1983's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi we saw Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in the iconic slave outfit. The outfit has spawned tons of cosplays, halloween costumes and merchandise, but it looks like Disney might have had enough with the outfit.

An undisclosed source familiar to Making Star Wars (via CBR), Disney is considering retiring the slave outfit from merchandise. While this rumor has yet to be confirmed, comments from Marvel Comics cover artist J. Scott Campbell posted in a Facebook thread suggest that the rumor might hold some truth.

"Daisy Ridley won't have to fight against anything. Disney is already well on its way to wiping out the "slave" outfit from any future products period. You will NOT see any future merchandising featuring the slave outfit ever again. Trust me.

"…I've heard it from two sources. We can't even draw Leia in a sexy pose at Marvel, let alone in that outfit. We also had a 3-D SL statue killed at a major manufacturer because there will no longer be any SL [slave Leia] merchandise."

Campbell's post references an interview between Carrie Fisher and Daisy Ridley, who stars as Rey in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Towards the end of October, Carrie Fisher sat down with Daisy Ridley via conference call through the magazine called “Interview”. It was during this conversations that Fisher told Ridley that she should "fight" for her outfit in the film saying, “You should fight for your outfit. Don’t be a slave like I was.”

Ridley agreed to fight for her portrayal, but Fisher repeated that Ridley should, "keep fighting against that slave outfit.”
