Rumor: Lucasfilm allegedly speaking to Ubisoft and Activision for Star Wars games

EA has been struggling to be loved in the public eye for several years now. After they gained the license for Star Wars in 2013, fans hoped we’d get multiple high-quality games from the studio but alas we’ve only gotten two games that were lackluster and controversial.

The publisher has multiple games in development but the poor reception to both attempts at the series as well as the controversial cancelation of Visceral Games’ single player Star Wars game as well as their overall studio closure has made EA the most hated company in gaming. Fans are upset with the treatment of the beloved IP, lawmakers have stepped in after hearing about the controversial monetization of the multiplayer in Battlefront 2, and Disney was annoyed by the bad press surrounding the brand leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In the wake of all this, a new report from Cinelinx claims that Lucasfilm and Disney are shopping around in hopes of moving the series to a new studio. The report claims that Ubisoft and Activision are among the companies being courted and that there are some ways for Disney to get around EA’s exclusivity contract. The only problem is this report is likely bogus.

While we’d love to see the Star Wars franchise in the hands of a capable single-player and multiplayer studio like Ubisoft, Cinelinx has an extensive track record of having “exclusives” that don’t ever pan out, including ones related to Star Wars. The site once claimed that a Knights of the Old Republic remake was coming in 2016 and that never happened. Could Lucasfilm and Disney be looking for a new developer for the Star Wars license? Totally possible. Do we buy it from this source? Not really. If we hear about this from another reputable site we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
