Rumor: PS4.5 ‘confirmed’ by new source

Last week, rumors began circulating suggesting that Sony was working on a new and more powerful version of the PlayStation 4, the PS4.5. The alleged console was said to feature an upgraded GPU to support both 4K resolution and add more processing power for games that utilize the PlayStation VR headset.

Reports are now coming in, confirming the existence of the PS4.5. However, while more details on the said console have released, Sony has not confirmed or commented on the PS4.5 themselves and have opted to refrain from offering any "comment on rumors or speculation."

According to Eurogamer, Sony's R&D have 'PlayStation 4K' (the PS4.5) prototype devices already created and will, in fact offer more GPU power to developers – making 4K resolution within reach. It has been noted thought. that will not be enough power to offer " native 4K gaming at the same quality level as current 1080p titles."

What is interesting about all of this speculation on the PS4K is that it was revealed last year.

Sony Computers Entertainment Vice President Masayasu Ito told Japanese site 4Gamer (via NeoGaf) about the PS4K in October 2015. While it's horribly translated through Google, Ito revealed that Sony was considering a more powerful PS4.

"As there was a hand of favorite game title, no longer need to re-buy for every model change of the game machine, can continue to move even a hand-held game in the future of the gaming machine in the long span.

When the out performance enhanced version of "PS4.1" specific machine, what was 30fps in the current PS4 might be able to play at 60fps. In terms of "PS4.1" specific machine has been enhanced performance, it might be to be able to play in 4K native if corresponding to the HDMI 2.0. Also, if in response to the HDMI 2.0a, that the patch that is provided, it may be able to play the hand game with HDR enabled. Without re-buy the remake, such as HD Remastered at full price, in the "PS4.x corresponding patch" is provided at a low cost, path is provided, such as can be upgraded to the evolution version of the better image representation It might be so."

In addition to that,  Netflix's Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt said that Sony had "promised" a newer version of the PS4 that had 4K video support and would eventually support HDR in February 2015.
