Rumor: Rockstar Games pursuing cross-play for Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox One and PS4

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most anticipated games of 2018. We know next to nothing about it but, come on, it's Rockstar and Red Dead so we know it'll be pretty great. Although we got some sad news last month regarding the game's delay, a new rumor has come out that might signal a good reason for its delay.

According to WWG's Liam Robertson, a pretty reliable source who leaked the Mario/Rabbids cross-over many months before it was officially revealed, Rockstar Games is in talks with Microsoft and Sony to do cross-play for Red Dead Redemption 2's online mode. The technology is there as we've seen with Minecraft and Rocket League but… both parties have to agree to it.

Earlier this week, Microsoft revealed that Minecraft will allow cross-play across almost all platforms except PlayStation. PlayStation's reasoning for this is because they feel like they can't keep their players safe if they're playing with other players on Xbox One or Nintendo Switch. There are parental controls and I imagine you can set an option in-game to block cross-play for some individuals but Sony won't agree to it.

Of course, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game for adults and presumably going to be rated M so… can Rockstar maybe convince Sony to do cross-play with Xbox just for Red Dead Redemption 2? If anyone could do it, it would be Rockstar since the the two companies seem to be on very good terms. Microsoft has said they're open to allowing cross-play between the two consoles despite the controversy going on right now.

As always, this is just a rumor at the moment so don't take it as confirmation yet, take it with a grain of salt and just hope that it's true and that Sony will agree if it is real!
