Rumor: Say goodbye to Microsoft Points with the next Xbox

Microsoft Points could be on their way out, if a new rumor is to be believed. A new rumor from the Verge suggests Microsoft could be doing away with the dreaded virtual currency system used on the Xbox 360. In its place would be a new gift card system similar to that of Apple's iTunes vouchers.

According to "sources familiar with Microsoft's Xbox plans," the new system would allow Xbox owners to purchase "true currency" which can be used to download content. Normal cash transactions with credit and debit cards will also be supported.

Microsoft has been long-rumored to do away with its virtual points system which offers 80 Microsoft Points for $1. It's expected that any points left over on your account will be converted into the appropriate cash value. Although the next Xbox will be unveiled next week, the rumors indicate the new payment system won't be officially announced until E3. The new system is expected to launch in time for the next-generation Xbox, however, and will work across all of Microsoft's marketplaces.
