Rumor: Sony in talks to merge gaming and film divisions

Sony could be one step closer to merging its gaming and film divisions.

The New York Post is reporting that the entertainment giant is weighing a restructuring of its U.S. operations and is having ongoing conversations about placing Sony Pictures Entertainment under its gaming division.

A move like that would mean Andrew House, current head of Sony Interactive Entertainment, would gain oversight of the studio.

At this point this news is merely a rumor, as Sony has responded saying:

“This is nothing but baseless rumor and speculation,” said Sony. “There are no plans to for Andrew House to oversee Sony Pictures.”

Still, a move like this would make sense as Sony’s gaming division has been profitable as of late, as the PS4 has sold more than 50 million units since its launch, even outselling the Xbox One in November thanks to the PS4 Pro.

Sony Pictures has also been struggling, as disappointments like Ghostbusters, Inferno, and The Magnificent Seven failed to light up the box office.
