Rumor: Sources confirm last-gen NVIDIA GPU leak

We have known about the Nintendo Switch's connection to NVIDIA for a while now, but have yet to receive confirmation on the Switch's specs from Nintendo. The latest Nintendo Switch rumor suggested that the Switch would be using a last-gen NVIDIA GPU, something like the Maxwell series' Tegra X1,  instead of the new Pascal technology.

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry has confirmed that Nintendo will be utilizing this less powerful GPU in the Switch. While using "last-gen" tech isn't the most exciting announcement, it should be noted that the Tegra X1 lent a number of its features to the new Pascal, specifically the double-rate FP16 support. The two GPUs are quite similar despite being from two different generations.

It was also detailed that while the Switch will utilize the Tegra X1, it's a customized version that might even feature other Pascal optimizations. Other details on the Switch's GPU are vague at best, however, it Digital Foundry did detail that the Switch does not run at the Tegra X1's full potential – even when docked. Additionally, it was found that the GPU was down-clocked in order to maintain battery life and thermal targets. Which means that when undocked, the Switch runs at 40% of the clock-speed of the docked device.

All this aside, the Switch will display at 720p when undocked and 1080p when docked.
