Rumor: Square Enix Licenses Unreal Engine 3 for Next Final Fantasy

Square Enix's beloved Final Fantasy franchise has been on a steady decline ever since the release of Final Fantasy XIII, the big name RPG failing to live up to its historical standards, disapointing fans and critics alike. This was followed up by the blunder that was Final Fantasy XIV, an MMO so disliked that Square ended up changing up the entire development team, making the game free to play until issues are fixed (which hasn't happened yet…).

One thing these games both have in common? They both use Square's own Crystal Tools engine, an engine Square has already said they will not be using for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Then came today's announcement that Square Enix has licensed Unreal Engine 3 for multiple yet-unannounced games.

This could be very big news for the Final Fantasy world, as the power of the Unreal engine would be a big change to the beautiful yet somewhat lacking power of Crystal Tools. We'll be interested to see how this plays out.
