RuneScape enters its third age with over 220 million players to date

RuneScape 3 is officially live.

Jagex Games Studios relaunched the popular fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game today, which is free to play. The browser-based MMORPG has come a long way since its debut in 2001, gaining over 220 million accounts in those 12 years, with players clocking over 1 million hours of playtime.

This new launch marks the start of the Battle of Lumbridge. Players' actions in the events will sculpt the content and lore in RuneScape 3 as it unfolds.

The title is available in five languages — English, French, German, Spanish, and Brazil-Portuguese — across 190 countries.

RuneScape 3 ushers in a new age for players in terms of user-driven content, story, gameplay, and technology, and we couldn’t be more excited for them to write the next chapter in RuneScape’s epic saga," said Phil Mansell, the game's executive producer, in a press statement.

RuneScape has undergone a series of developments, including an HD and "old school" version. You can check out an infographic of stats on the game's website.
