Rupert Wyatt, who directed Fox's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, will direct the upcoming X-Men spinoff film, Gambit.
Not much is known about the upcoming film, which will star Channing Tatum (22 Jump Street), but it has a release date of October 7, 2016. Josh Zetumer (Robotcop reboot) penned the script for the film, which is being produced by Tatum, Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg.
Gambit, a favorite among many X-Men fans, is a mutant with the ability to harness kinetic energy. The character was originally played by Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, John Carter) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but they didn't give the strong character nearly enough screen time and also removed his Cajun accent.
Gambit's October 2016 release puts it in between X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27, 2016) and Wolverine 3 (March 3, 2017).
