There was a time when GTA V didn’t dominate the open world crime genre for five consecutive years and other games could come in and fill that hole, one of those franchises being Saints Row.
Saints Row was a popular, over the top crime series during the last generation inspired by the likes of GTA: San Andreas. It took the absurdity and mayhem found in Rockstar’s highly-successful franchise and made it the foundation of its franchise, going so far as to add purple dildo baseball bats, superpowers, and much more in later entries.
The franchise found success after Rockstar took some time to get a GTA game on Xbox 360 and PS3 and continued to grow as Rockstar pulled back on some of the more fantastical elements of GTA by pushing a more gritty, grounded crime drama in GTA IV. Saints Row pushed the bar, upping the ante with its wildly fun co-op, the ridiculous weapons and missions, and more.
Now, after being on hiatus for five years (not counting a failed spin-off with Agents of Mayhem), Saints Row is making a small comeback attempt. In 2019, a port of Saints Row: The Third will be released on Nintendo Switch. No details were given regarding the port outside of the 2019 release window but we can expect it’ll be the game as we remember it with some extra polish and maybe Nintendo Switch exclusive features like motion controls.
For those wondering why they chose Saints Row: The Third over 1 or 2, it has been cited as there are issues with the code for those games and it would be borderline impossible to remaster them at this stage. Both games are available on Xbox One’s backward compatibility feature, though.
Saints Row:Â The Third is currently coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch, there has been nothing said of an Xbox One/PS4 version as of yet.
