Earlier this year, Insomniac Games released undoubtedly the best Spider-Man game. It had an incredible story, thrilling gameplay, and lots of easter eggs and suits paying tribute to the character’s history.
However, that wasn’t totally enough for some people. Some extremist fans desired the suit from director Sam Raimi’s beloved Spider-Man trilogy, so much so that they began harassing Insomniac and individual employees for it for months. While there were a lot of people who were civil about this ordeal, there were also a lot of whiny nerds who acted like babies whose mom just told them they can’t get a candy bar at the checkout line of Walmart.
After months of headaches from some over the top “fans”, Insomniac announced this morning that the Raimi suit (referred to as the Webbed suit in the game) has been added to Spider-Man via a free update. All you need to do is turn on your PS4, update the game, and you’ll find it at the bottom of the suits menu.
Of course, some may think that they just threw together this suit in a couple of days to please the fans but that’s simply not how game development works, especially with a licensed product like this. We have to imagine this was a long process spanning back to around the time the game came out or maybe even before it.
Insomniac likely had to go through Sony, get approval for it, go to Marvel, get approval for it, and maybe even consult movie producers involved with the Spider-Man franchise. You can even see that in the image released above that there’s a copyright symbol from 2002 (CPII seems to be Columbia Pictures’ full name, Columbia Pictures Industries Inc.) suggesting there was definitely legal things that needed to be sorted out.
We imagine that Marvel and Sony were also likely holding up the process out of simply wanting to include suits from the new movies rather than old ones but eventually some agreement was made.
Whatever the case may be, the nerds can stop crying, the Raimi suit is real and available now. Players will be able to play around in the suit in the third and final DLC, Silver Linings, which releases tomorrow.
Marvel’s Spider-Man is out now exclusively on PS4.
