After the Samsung keynote during the 2015 product showcase in Miami, I was able to briefly talk to Jorge Lopez, the Regional Mobile Product Manager, about the Samsung Gear VR, and why it was absent from this showcase.
Quite simply, it doesn't quite have the killer app it needs to show it off yet. He touched on its presence at CES, which is undeniably one of the biggest tech shows that happens yearly in Las Vegas. At CES 2015, Samsung announced Samsung Milk VR, which will be part of its on-demand service that will have new, great content for the Gear VR. David Alpert, the Executive Producer of The Walking Dead also came on stage during CES to announce that a Milk VR exclusive show, Skybound, will be available for the device.
With that said, Samsung wants to make sure that when it does show off its VR headset to the masses, that it does so with a bang. Jorge stated that they're currently in talks and hoping to work with Disney for Gear VR experiences. Of course that's all he could say on the matter, so whether that meant pre-existing movies being turned into full VR experiences, or original animations, is still up in the air. However, if Samsung can snag Disney as a Gear VR partner for the Milk VR initiative, that would certainly be enough for Disney fans everywhere to at least give the headset a second glance.
