Samsung’s Gear VR headset is officially on the market

Yet, I still find myself missing the old climb-in machines of yore.

Looking to get a jump on next year’s wave of virtual reality peripheral releases, Samsung went ahead and sent their Gear VR headset to retail market this week.

Assuming you already have one of the VR compatible smartphones (Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, or Galaxy S6 Edge+) then the $99 investment isn’t too much of a kick in the shorts and makes it worth checking out.

The headset boasts a personal VR theater, allowing users to view full length movies through the set without distraction (something that sounds appealing for those of us that fly often), virtual vacations, and, of course, portable gaming.

It’s also the first to hit the retail market, beating PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and the Steam joint venture HTC Vive and, conveniently, also hitting stores the weekend before the annual American consumer mania descends with Black Friday.

However, the constraint of needing one of the four compatible smartphones is a little frustrating, given the huge sea of varying phones out there, the price tag does make one hopeful for what we’re going to see with next years line of broader capability units.
