Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection launches for free on Epic Games Store

OK, here’s a weird one. Esteemed Japanese game publisher SNK is going to release a massive collection of cult fighting games of the retro Neo Geo console for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch starting next month. This Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection will be entirely free to claim and keep on PC via the Epic Games Store for an entire week, however.

PC gamers have already grown accustomed to the bevy of free game gifts given away by Epic every other week. This has been going on for well over a year now and is used to entice gamers to use the Epic Games Store as the choice of place for PC gaming. Whether it’s working out still remains a mystery, but that didn’t led to Epic stop their strategy.

Quite the opposite in fact. The free games are arguably getting better and better with Rockstar’s huge blockbuster GTAV just recently being handed out for absolutely free. We thought that was a huge deal – which it absolutely was – but Epic has somewhat trumped that with today’s announcement that the Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection will be given for free right from the game’s launch on June 11th. PC users will have one week to claim the game before it becomes purchasable with money. What a twist.

To be fair, the Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection is just a retro collection of 90s fighting games but in the end, it’s still a new game release. Here’s a list of the titles that are included in the collection. The last one in particular is interesting since it has never been released previously and makes the collection a must-have for every fan of fighting games.

  • Samurai Shodown (1993)
  • Samurai Shodown II (1994)
  • Samurai Shodown III (1995)
  • Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa’s Revenge (1996)
  • Samurai Shodown V (2003)
  • Samurai Shodown V Special (2004)
  • Samurai Shodown V Prefect

The large collection is busting out the seams with not only games but a dedicated music player where you can enjoy more than 200 iconic music tracks, full online support for each title, tons of concept art, and much more.

Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection is going to launch first on the Epic Games Store on June 11th, followed by a Steam release on June 18th. PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One users will have to wait one extra month when they will receive the collection on July 28th.
