Saturday Xbox LIVE outage not the result of online hackers

If you tried logging onto Xbox LIVE throughout the day Saturday, you likely ran into several error code messages announcing that Xbox LIVE couldn’t connect. In addition, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was unavailable, and is still facing issues for players who are attempting to launch the hit. According to Microsoft, these issues were in part due to routine, scheduled maintenance, and not the result of an online hack that many outlets reported on.

Yesterday, Microsoft released a statement regarding the situation that left the Xbox Support Twitter team on edge throughout the day:

"We are aware of an issue members are having sending and receiving messages, seeing friend's statuses, sending or receiving game and party invites, and accepting friend requests on Xbox LIVE. We are currently working as fast as we can to get this issue fixed, thank you for your patience during this time and we will update you with any new information we receive."

Ironically enough, the outage took place during a heated debate on the likelihood that Microsoft’s next-generation console will require always-online Internet connection for accessing and possibly playing games.

As always, if you’re unsure about the state of the LIVE service, you can head over to the Xbox LIVE status page by clicking here, which will let you know if there’s any trouble running across the board.
