According to a report from Variety, Scarlett Johansson is set to star in DreamWorks' adaptation of the popular Japanese anime Ghost in the Shell. The film will be directed by Rupert Sanders, best known for Snow White and the Huntsman, and the script is by Bill Wheeler.
Ghost in the Shell is a 1995 anime based off of the manga of the same name. It follows Motoko Kusanaigi and her counter-cyberterrorist organization. It's very cyber punk and excellent, and the animation is top-notch.
According to the Variety report, "Steven Spielberg is a huge fan of the original and has long wanted to get this film off the ground. A commitment from a star like Johansson should help in getting the pic greenlit for production."
Johansson, of course, starred in The Avengers and will be in the sequel coming out this May, Avengers: Age of Ultron. She also starred in last year's action film Lucy, which made $394 million worldwide, proving she can carry an action sci-fi film on her own.
We are sure that some Ghost in the Shell fans will be disappointed with the casting choice, but let's face it… a Ghost in the Shell live-action movie isn't happening without someone like Johansson. We're excited to see how the film comes together and look forward to Johansson doing more stuff like this:
