Sony has shuttered SCE Studio Liverpool, one of the longest-running video game companies.
The studio started as Psygnosis in 1984 and contributed to the success of the PlayStation, created the original Wipeout in 1995, and made Colony Wars in 1996. The company also published the original Lemmings and has produced games for every PlayStation platform since its inception.
Sony came to the decision to shut down Studio Liverpool after reviewing and assessing "all current and planned projects for the short and medium term," the parent company said in a statement to Kotaku.
"However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers.
"Our Liverpool Facility will continue to operate, housing a number of other vital WWS!E and SCEE Departments."
The studio's last game was Wipeout 2048 for PlayStation Vita.
