Yesterday, legendary game developer Hideo Kojima teased that he would have a trailer to showcase at his San Diego Comic-Con panel and while he did deliver on that, the trailer itself probably isn’t what you were hoping for. Instead of a new look at his upcoming “naked Norman Reedus cradling a baby on a beach full of dead whales” epic, Death Stranding, Kojima presented a “logo movie” for his studio, Kojima Productions.
The trailer showcases a character Kojima refers to as “Ludens” exploring what at first appears to be an ocean floor but turns out to be an unknown planet or moon. A digital whale leaps out of the ground behind the character, perhaps in a reference to Death Stranding, but other than that, what you see is what you get.
Kojima did clarify that Ludens won’t actually be in Death Stranding, but that the character is representative of what Kojima Productions is all about. He said:
“No, Ludens won’t be in Death Stranding, but people can play with this character. Go ahead and put it in your fan art or whatever….Kojima Productions is represented in Ludens. The concept is to use bleeding-edge technology and exploring the unknown. A scientist in the Netherlands proposed the concept that the more we play, the more we evolve.”
So there you have it. To be fair, Kojima never actually said that his trailer reveal would be anything Death Stranding related, and the art he presented in his tweet featured only the company’s Ludens character. Plus, Kojima Productions is only just getting started on the game itself as they put the E3 2016 trailer together in only two and a half months, so any expectations that this game is ready to be shown off in full should go right out the window.
