Marvel plans to unveil a 13 foot tall bronze statue of Captain America at Comic Con 2016, set to be placed as a monument in Brooklyn next month.
The San Diego Comic Con is only a few short weeks away and the internet is buzzing with anticipation. This year marks a lot of milestones for some beloved franchises. Star Trek is celebrating its 50th anniversary, 'Aliens' is having a reunion panel for its 30th anniversary, and Captain America is being honored on his 75th anniversary.
To commemorate Cap's place in the hearts of fans the world over, Marvel will be unveiling a 13 foot bronze statue at Comic Con that will then be placed in Steve Roger's hometown of Brooklyn, New York during a dedication ceremony on August 10th. The statue will weigh a full ton and depict the Avenger posing with his signature shield over the words "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn."
In an interview with USA Today, Senior VP of Licensing for Marvel at Disney Consumer Products, Paul Gitter, went over the company's plans for the commemoration and why they chose to honor Captain America with a statue:
"For the past 75 years, Captain America has inspired generations of fans, serving as the ultimate global icon for freedom, strength, and doing the right thing. [His pose was] symbolically chosen to showcase the impressive strength of Captain America and his stoic form. Captain America’s signature shield also takes prominence, paying homage to his heroism, indestructible power, and determination. We hope that when fans see the statue, they will think back to a favorite comic book, treasured action figure, or even be transported back to a special time and place in their lives where Captain America’s values played influence.”
