Rare has unveiled that its massively popular online pirate-sandbox game Sea of Thieves is inbound to receive a Steam release. There’s no concrete release date yet but the studio stated it will happen soon. Furthermore, the Steam version will feature full cross-play support between the Microsoft Store and Xbox One.
Announced via the official Xbox news blog Xbox Wire, Rare studio head Craig Duncan shared the good news with the gaming world. Sea of Thieves originally came out on the Xbox One and PC via the Microsoft Store two years ago. With continuous content updates, events and general improvements, the swash-buckling pirate game enamored gamers all over the world. It sure helped that the art style is outstandingly colorful while still offering cutting edge visuals.
Indeed, Duncan also states that more than 10 million players have experienced the unique pirate adventure of Sea of Thieves to date. A humongous number for any game, even more so for a strictly online game. That goes to show just how good a job Rare managed to do by bringing a jolly game conversion into one of the most popular settings. Being a real pirate who’s out for booty!
If you’re seeking the full, glorious sweep of the pirate life, you can dive head-first into Adventure mode where you’re sure to find a wealth of secrets and plunder, guarded by more enemies than you can shake a blunderbuss at. For those looking for a more PvP (Pirate versus Pirate) experience, the Sea Dogs are waiting in The Arena, where you can test your skill against other aspiring champions.
Besides just having the option to play one of the best games of the past decade on the PCs most popular gaming client, the Steam version will also offer full cross-play support between all existing platforms. Meaning, Steam users will be able to play with and against Microsoft Store and Xbox One gamers.
The Steam page for Sea of Thieves is up already but you can’t pre-purchase it just yet. Seeing how the game goes for $39.99 on the Microsoft Store currently, it’s safe to assume it’ll cost exactly that once the Steam version goes live.
