SEGA brings one of the best Action-JRPGs to the West with Sakura Wars

SEGA has shared the great news that their previously Japan-only reboot of the iconic Sakura Wars JRPG series is headed to the West. Owners of a PlayStation 4 can look forward to April 28th when the game launches exclusively on Sony’s home console. Watch the announcement trailer here!

It has been a full decade since the last Sakura Wars title came out, and that was on Nintendo’s ancient Wii. Not only was it bound to a system many hardcore gamers didn’t own, but it itself was also a port of a PlayStation 2 game. Keeping that in mind, SEGA giving the franchise a full action-RPG reboot treatment last year was incredible news. Sadly, it only came out in Japan.

The stage is set in a steampunk version of 1940s Imperial Tokyo. Only a short while ago, a cataclysmic event destroyed the Imperial Combat Revue of Tokyo, the capital’s global defense force stationed at the Imperial Theater. Now home to the Flower Division, an inept rookie squad who also strives to impart hope on the citizenry with their theatrical talents, the theater has fallen on hard times and risks closure. It’s up to Seijuro Kamiyama as the captain of the new Tokyo revue to lead his squad and restore the Imperial Combat Revue and the theater back to their former glory! With the help of the revue’s five colorful performers, he must rise to the challenge of competing in the Combat Revue World Games, protecting the inhabitants of Tokyo and getting the theater back on track.

But SEGA has not forsaken its international audience and has now announced that Sakura Wars is indeed coming to Western shores. Just like the Japanese version, the localization will only be available on the PlayStation 4. But with how SEGA has been on the forefront of Japanese publishers who embrace the PC, we wouldn’t be too surprised to see a PC port sometime down the line.
