While Nintendo chases down anyone that uses the image of their characters, names or other iconic features from their games, Sega has decided to let fan remakes flourish.
Nintendo has a history of removing every fan-made game that surfaces. Recently, we saw Pokemon Uranium get taken down, the fan-made Metroid 2 remake get taken down, No Mario's Sky get a DMCA notice (but that didn't stop them), and over 500 other fan-made games get taken down.
While some of the people that worked on the projects defend Nintendo, saying it was their "legal obligation" to protect their IPs, fans weren't as forgiving.
Sega seems to be taking the forgiving path when it comes to fan remakes of their games. When fans created the 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game, 'Green Hill Paradise Act 2,' everyone braced themselves for the DMCA notice that would shut the fan project down.
That DMCA notice never came, instead, the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube gave fans the thumbs up.
It's official, SEGA has done what Nintendo won't.
