Despite near universal praise, and being recognized as the deepest, most technical fighting game series ever created, there hasn't been a new Virtua Fighter in roughly a decade now. Possibly because such a great fighting game is expensive to develop, the series didn't sell as well as its contemporaries, and Sega hasn't exactly been killing it since 2006.
Sega has now renewed the trademark, according to Trademarkia. While that doesn't necessarily mean a new game is coming, and the series will likely remain dormant, it does show Sega has some interest in the franchise.
That interest could be a new game or more cameos in other fighting games, which is all the rage now: Ryu made the jump to Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, Akuma is joining the Tekken 7 roster, and Mai Shiranui is bouncing into the cast of Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, a game the face of the series, Akira “”Karate Man” Yuki, had made an appearance in. Maybe more are on the way?
