SEGA reveals free-to-play, 2D side-scroller Sonic Runners

Sonic is back to looking like his old self.

Sega has revealed their new Sonic the Hedgehog game the way that almost every Japanese game is revealed, through Famitsu; but, since Google translate only works so well, we'll give you the scoop.

Sonic Runners has Sonic the Hedgehog and his crew looking like their old selves; there's no hint of the Sonic Boom work here. The game will be a 2D side-scrolling free-to-play runner with various stages that will take you anywhere from a minute to two minutes to complete.

Going mobile with Sonic isn't much of a surprise. Just last month Sega announced they would refocusing to mobile and PC games. Sonic Runners will adopt classic features from the franchise like ring collecting, stages with loops, and Dr. Robotnik. Sonic will automatically move forward in each level, requiring the player take control when Sonic jumps by tapping the screen. Both Tails and Knuckles will be playable in the game, but you have to unlock them first.

While the game is free-to-play, expect in-game purchases for items.

Sonic Runners is set to release in spring 2015, but Famitsu claims the game will be released in Japan this month.
