‘Sequel or prequel’ for Mass Effect 4?

When it comes to the next Mass Effect game, BioWare has been quite open with fans — at least as open as you can expect to see from a development studio owned by EA. We already know BioWare is working on Mass Effect 4, but what exactly will it be about?

That seems to be the million dollar question, and one that BioWare themselves haven't even answered yet. Which could be why they are interested in hearing what fans want.

Over on Twitter, Mass Effect series producer Casey Hudson asked fans what they would be more interested in: a prequel or a sequel?

"Parsing through your thoughts on the next #ME game. Would you be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?", he wrote.

It's certainly not an easy question to answer as both choices would have their own complications in terms of the already-established series lore. While the timer period is still in question, one very important decision has already been made; Commander Shepard will definitely not be in the next Mass Effect game.

Last week, BioWare revealed Mass Effect 4 would run on the Frostbite engine and that the studio is "exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts."
