Serious Sam engine released to the public

The aptly titled Serious Engine, created by developer Croteam for the creation of the original Serious Sam games, is now available to all.

The engine was publicly released in honor of Serious Sam’s upcoming 15th anniversary, Croteam wrote in a blog post. Serious Engine v1.10 includes the source code for Serious Sam Classic: The First Encounter and The Second Encounter, and was slightly souped-up before its public debut.

“Historically, this version of Serious Engine is very important for Croteam and for me personally,” said developer Vyacheslav Nikitenko, who prepared the engine for public release. “I created several mods for Serious Sam back in the day, before even starting to work on the source code, and it was a great tool for learning.

“And it’s even better today! Obviously, Serious Engine v1.10 won’t produce top-notch graphics, but the source code is still very well commented, easy to modify, and there are lots of user-generated mods out there,” Nikitenko added. “This version has everything you need to build your own game—just experiment.”

You can grab the engine yourself over on Github, and get schooled via fan site SeriousZone’s many informative guides.
