UPDATE: The reveal actually ended up being a teaser for a full reveal in April, Square Enix is definitely toying with us. You can view the brief teaser trailer below and come back on April 27th for the full trailer.
The original story follows below.
With the release of the long-awaited Tomb Raider movie coming this Friday, Square Enix is gearing up to announce their next entry in the long-running video game series. While the existence of this game leaked in October 2016 via a powerpoint that someone was editing on a train, this is the first official confirmation of the game.
Tomorrow, Square Enix will officially reveal Shadow of the Tomb Raider in some form (likely a cinematic trailer with gameplay saved for E3) if a teaser showing an image of an eclipse on the Tomb Raider website is to be believed. The game has been described as the “climactic finale of Lara’s origin story” meaning this will likely conclude some sort of Tomb Raider trilogy but makes it sound like this will also mark the beginning of a whole new chapter in Lara Croft’s story where she truly discovers who she is meant to be.
Kotaku reports that the Square Enix invited members of the press to go see the game at Eidos Montreal (developers of the last two Deus Ex games) so we may get some screenshots and hands-on impressions of the title. Crystal Dynamics usually heads up the Tomb Raider games but they are currently tied up with the untitled game based off of Marvel’s Avengers property. More details are expected to come for that at E3 this year.
Some nosy people on the internet also poked around on the website’s source code and discovered that the game’s release date is currently slated for September 14th, 2018 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC so we don’t have to worry about any console exclusivity this time around.
As of right now, the game’s official reveal is scheduled for March 15th at 6 am PT. Be sure to visit GameZone shortly after the reveal where we’ll have all the latest news regarding Lara Croft’s next adventure.
The Tomb Raider movie will open nationwide this Friday and is already receiving some mixed reviews from critics overseas. It is currently sitting at a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but will continue to shift as more reviews pour in from across the web.
