Simon Pegg recruited Wiki writers to help write Star Trek: Beyond

Simon Pegg has just revealed that he recruited the help of the official Star Trek wiki database, Memory Alpha, to consult on the latest film.

Being an avid geek and sci-fi nerd, Simon Pegg, famous for his work on Spaced, The Cornetto Trilogy, and as the wise-cracking engineer of the new Trek films, Scotty, was asked to take over as writer for the upcoming Star Trek: Beyond along with co-writer, Doug Jung.

Apparently, in an attempt to appease the hardcore fans who weren't necessarily happy with its predecessor, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Pegg reached out to the admins for the most comprehensive Star Trek wiki online, Memory Alpha, for some consultation on the finished product to keep things as accurate to the lore as possible. They delved into history, characters, and even helped him come up with an apropos name for one of the new devices to be featured in the movie. He had this to say:

"We had the entirety of ‘Star Trek’ history at our disposal, and it’s always there online. There’s an amazing Wikipedia online called Memory Alpha. It became Doug [Jung] and my resource and the place that we’d turn to whenever we wanted to know, ‘What kind of weapons does an NX vessel carry?’ Memory Alpha has it. We actually wrote to the Memory Alpha guys and got them to name a certain device in the movie. I sent them a letter saying, ‘Can you come up with this for me?’ In two hours, they came back with an entire etymological history of what the thing was. It’s beautiful. It’s fantastic to have that support network."

Star Trek: Beyond releases July 22nd!
