When a game claims to have dragons in it, you know it’s going to turn heads. How many dragons will it have? When and where will they attack? Has the age of dragons truly arrived?
These are important questions, ones that thankfully Bethesda is available to answer. In an interview with Norwegian magazine Gamer.no, Game Director Todd Howard set the record straight: “There is an unlimited number of dragons.” Thank the gods!
“One of our designers actually put in a random event I encountered, where I ended up being chased by three dragons and I thought ‘who the hell did this?’ I felt like Frodo in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and was really frightened,” he continued. “So I asked him to remove it. But no, dragons are generated automatically (in addition to that there are a number of specific encounters, of course).”
Hopefully that will put to rest any concerns you have about dragon quantity in the next Elder Scrolls game. Infinite dragons? It doesn’t get any better than that!
In all honesty, though, the random nature of the encounters is pretty exciting. Somewhere in the transition from Morrowind to Oblivion, Bethesda’s game design became too rigid. Here’s hoping this is a sign of many more opportunities to create your own adventure in Skyrim.
