Sling TV just made its console debut on the Xbox One with no firm confirmation as to whether or not the application will be hitting the PlayStation 4. Fortunately for PlayStation owners, Sony today had a soft launch for PlayStation Vue, a similar cloud-based service that allows users to stream live TV and on-demand TV without a cable or satellite subscription.
Humor me for a second and imagine Sling TV hitting the PS4. How would the two TV services compare? First off, Sling TV's base package is available for $20 a month, while PlayStation Vue's base "Access" package is $49.99. That's 2.5 times more for PS Vue, but is it worth it?
PS Vue has around 50+ channels (it's different for every location it's available in at the moment), which is almost three times more than Sling TV's 20 channels. Upgrading PS Vue to the next highest package is $10 will add four more channels and upgrading to the top tier for yet another $10 will add 20 more channels; bringing the monthly fee to $60.
If you were to upgrade Sling TV it would cost $5 per package. If you bought all the packages it would add $25 to your monthly subscricption; bringing the total cost to $45 a month.
Here's a list of the base PS Vue channels, with Sling TV overlaps in bold:
CBS | CNBC | Sports 2 | Nicktoons |
CBS+ | CNN | FX | OWN |
Cozi TV | Comedy Central | FXX | Oxygen |
Fox | Destination America | HGTV | Science |
My TV | Discovery | HLN | Spike |
NBC | Discovery America | ID Identification Discovery | Syfy |
Telemundo | DIY | MSNBC | TBS |
TeleXitos | E! | MTV | TLC |
Animal Planet | Esquire | MTV2 | TNT |
BET | Food Network | National Geographic | Travel Channel |
Bravo | Fox Business | NBCSN | TruTV |
Cartoon Network | Fox News | Nick Jr. | TV Land |
CMT | Fox Sports | Nickelodeon | USA |
VH1 |
What channels does Sling TV have that PS Vue doesn't? ESPN, ESPN2, History, Lifetime, A&E, Disney Channel, ABC Family, and H2.
What channels does PS Vue have that Sling TV doesnt? CBS, Fox, NBC, Fox News, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Bravo, FX, SyFy, USA, Discovery, Animal Planet, Nat Geo, BET, CNBC, MSNBC, E!, TLC, and VH1.
Which service is better? Depends on what you want. One offers more, but has a higher price and the other hits the wallet's sweet spot. Either way you are spending money monthly on top of a bill for Internet.
