Sonic 4: Episode II will ‘lock on’ to Episode I

Remember that awesome lock-on technology from the Sega Genesis days? Though I never owned Sega's home console, I've always thought of the whole "stick your Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 carts into the Sonic & Knuckles game to unlock new content" thing as something that was quite impressive. It was weird, no doubt, but impressive nonetheless.

It looks like Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II will feature similar "technology", though you won't be physically stacking and attaching cartridges on top of each other. Speaking to Destructoid, a Sega rep discussed the big unlockable feature that players could access if they purchase both Episode I and Episode II on the same platform.

The first thing worth mentioning is that buying both episodes on the same device will ensure that you get the free Episode Metal. This content will allow players to take Metal Sonic through stages from Episode I. Additionally, Episode Metal will feature more cutscenes than Episode II, and these will serve to connect the stories of Episode I, Episode II, and Sonic CD.

Additionally, if you buy Episode II on your iPhone or Xbox 360, you'll be able to continue where you left off on your iPad or Windows Phone, respectively, and vice versa. Oh, the power of cloud saving!

Sonic 4: Episode II is something I'm personally really looking forward to, and with new graphics and a physics engine that's closer to the Genesis games, plenty of Sonic aficionados will likely be stoked to play the upcoming title. Also worth noting is the fact that while Sega previously stated that this episodic series was ending with Episode II, that may not necessarily be the case if the game does well in sales.

Also, no Episode II on WiiWare, because the Wii can't handle that much memory and physics power. The Wii U, on the other hand, may be a possibility. Maybe.
